Born in 1934 in Gothava, Gujarat, Bhavsar grew up amid vivid textiles, rangoli floor art and the colour of Holi, in a family connected to fabric printing.

He studied and taught at the Seth C. N. School of Art in Ahmedabad, gaining early recognition in India before leaving for the United States in 1962.
