The Paresh Maity Artist Story

Born in 1965 in Tamluk, a West Bengal town famous for terracotta, Maity modelled clay idols as a schoolboy and sold them to help fund his own education.

He began with watercolours of river scenes near the Bay of Bengal, an early, bodily feel for water and light that never left his work.

He mastered oils at the Government College of Art, Kolkata, then trained further at the College of Art in New Delhi, chasing formal skill with single-minded determination.

The Paresh Maity artist journey now spans four decades and more than eighty solo shows worldwide, from London and Venice to China and Japan.

The Style Behind Paresh Maity Art

Paresh Maity art began with evocative watercolour landscapes recalling Turner and Winslow Homer, before moving toward bold figures inspired by Rembrandt, Picasso and Rabindranath Tagore.

He paints directly from nature to capture the moment – the light, the emotion, the feeling. Over time his style grew more atmospheric, graphic and richly coloured.

A Master Across Mediums

Though celebrated in watercolour, he works freely in oil, acrylic, mixed media, sculpture and photography, refusing to be confined to any single tradition.

Every Paresh Maity artwork carries this restless, joyful curiosity – a sense of a life spent looking closely at the world and loving it.

Iconic Works and Recognition

His monumental mural The Indian Odyssey – stretching over 800 feet at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport – is among the longest paintings in the world.

In 2010 his exhibition Shesh Lekha, based on Tagore’s final poems, opened at the National Gallery of Modern Art. His sculptures have since reached the Venice Biennale.

Maity received the Padma Shri in 2014, alongside the Royal Watercolour Society award in London and many national honours. A Paresh Maity artwork holds a place in this celebrated story.

Collecting and Placing Paresh Maity in Your Space

His luminous palette and travelled subjects suit collectors who value beauty and storytelling. Provenance and condition remain central to informed, long-term collecting.

In interiors, a Maity landscape brings light and calm – a living-room wall, a quiet reading corner or a hospitality lobby that needs warmth and depth.

Our team helps architects and interior designers place each work to scale and light, so its glow carries across the room.

Themes That Define Maity’s Work

Water, light and travel define his imagery. Boats, bridges, deserts and crowded ghats appear across his work, always bound together by an unmistakable glow.

He treats each destination as a feeling rather than a postcard. Venice, Varanasi and Rajasthan share the same luminous, emotional language on his paper and canvas.

This unity lets a single piece stand for a lifetime of looking. Collectors value that depth beneath the beauty.

Why His Work Resonates Worldwide

Maity offers light and joy at a time when much contemporary art turns inward. That optimism, handled with real skill, gives his work broad and lasting appeal.

His mastery of watercolour – a notoriously unforgiving medium – earns respect from serious collectors and institutions alike.

Works held in major museums – from the British Museum to the National Gallery of Modern Art – reinforce both the cultural weight and the long-term value of owning an original.

Caring for Your Paresh Maity Artwork

Watercolours are light-sensitive, so frame with UV-protective glazing and avoid direct sun. We share condition notes and care guidance with every purchase.

Our team advises on archival mounting and framing, so the paper and pigments stay fresh for decades.

Maity’s output is vast – drawings, watercolours, oils, mixed media, sculpture and photography – yet each carries his signature light. Originals remain the most prized by collectors.

Because his work is so widely admired, provenance is essential. Every piece we offer is documented and sourced with care, protecting both your investment and your peace of mind.

Whether you are beginning a collection or adding a landmark work, a Maity original brings warmth, light and storytelling that lifts any interior.
